Traffic Violations

Wisconsin law states that driving is not a right, but a privilege. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) uses a 12-point demerit system to decide who will receive this privilege. If a driver gets 12 or more points in one year, the DOT will suspend that driver’s license for at least 2 months. If the points were received due to an OWI (operating while intoxicated) offense, the suspension could be longer.
